Rep. Becca Balint Votes ‘No’ on Inflated Defense Spending Bill

“It’s time we finally instead invest in the urgent needs of working families”

“Federal spending is a reflection of our values. And Vermonters are sick of inflating an unchecked Pentagon budget – following nothing but failed audits. It’s time we finally invest instead in the urgent needs of working families.

“I’ll always support a strong defense system for our country and a fully funded National Guard. But it’s unconscionable to vote to give the military nearly a trillion dollars when working families in this country can barely make ends meet.

“I know Vermonters share my concern around funding robust and immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza. I’m troubled that this bill includes a prohibition on contributions to the UN Relief and Works Agency until March 2025. Sustained funding to UNRWA alongside accountability for any UNRWA workers who participated in the October 7th attacks is essential. If UNRWA is no longer funded, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza will worsen substantially.

“However, I’m proud to work alongside Democratic leaders who worked tirelessly to remove dangerous anti-LGBTQ+, anti-immigrant, anti-climate provisions from this bill which ultimately passed the House.”
