Representative-elect Becca Balint Statement on Anniversary of January 6th Attack on Capitol

Washington, D.C – “Today, two years following the insurrection on the Capitol, I stand in the very same building, reflecting on the heroism that upheld the principles of democracy that day.

When I came to Washington earlier this week, ready to be sworn-in, I felt hopeful and eager to be a part of a functioning and healthy democratic system. However, as we watch the House be held hostage by the dysfunction across the aisle, I am disheartened by the lack of urgency to lead our country with integrity and purpose.

As we begin the 118th Congress, we are reminded that democracy cannot be taken for granted. We must not allow ourselves to become numb to political vitriol and violence. As Vermont’s voice in the House of Representatives, I am more committed than ever to defending our democracy with honesty, courage, and unity.

I join with colleagues here in Washington to honor the lives lost, those injured, and the sacrifices officers made to protect our nation’s capital and the peaceful transfer of power from violent attack. As I get to work for Vermonters, I remain committed to strengthening our democracy and expanding voting rights to live up to our oath of creating a more perfect union.”
